Papules
- small inflamed acne lesions that are pink and bumpy in appearance
and can be tender to the touch.
Pustules
- acne lesions that are red at the base and characterized by an
inflamed, pus-filled inner region.
Nodules
- large lesions that occur deep within the skin and which can
be extremely painful to the touch.
Cysts
- lesions that occur deep within the skin, characterized by highly
inflamed, pus-filled regions that are severely painful. Cystic acne
is the type of acne that is most likely to result in scarring, although
any type of acne lesion can lead to scarring in some instances.
